Methods for a safer office reopening—
Part 3: cockroaches

Many office were hastily shuttered in the Spring or early Summer of 2020 with minimal preparation and cleaning for remaining closed for more than a year. Almost all of us anticipated a quick return to the office in a few week’s time. Any food waste left behind will have attracted hungry cockroaches and possibly rodents. Any bed bugs that were in the building will probably still be there... and will be hungry!

This is third of four articles to help you safely reopen your office and specifically addresses eliminating cockroaches. We previously looked at methods for eliminating odors and mitigating rodent-borne dangers. Like rodents, cockroaches feast on our food scraps, trash, and detritus.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches instill a primal disgust because they subsist in and on our filth. Food scraps. Crumbs. Sugary residues from drinks. These insects take sustenance from our waste.

GreenTech Heat Solutions has successfully eradicated cockroaches since early 1990 when the Health Department advised Fat Freddy’s restaurant in Irvine California that they were going to be closed down due to an excessive roach infestation.

Treatment commenced at about midnight and ended at about 5:00 a.m. Most of the voids in the building were dusted with boric acid powder, an effective but slow-reacting desiccant. Heaters were turned on and temperatures reached as high as 115 ̊F/46 ̊F in the wall voids.

A week later the health inspector responsible for inspecting the restaurant called Dr. Linford and asked to know what kind of treatment had been conducted. The health inspector then said that she could not flush out one live roach. She commented that roaches had been dying for the first three or four days and then she found nothing alive after that time.

The process to heat treat a 90,000 cubic-foot restaurant that eliminated the entire cockroach infestation will also kill all cockroaches and other insects in just about any office building.

Don’t take our word for what GreenTech Heat can do to cockroaches:

About three months ago, we treated an apartment in a senior home with our GreenTech Heat equipment. We were using heat to primarily kill the bed bugs, however this tenant also had a very severe infestation of German cockroaches. Before heating we applied boric acid powder and Seclira aerosol (IGR). As we were heating with the Titan 800, the cockroaches were running everywhere! We heated at about 150˚F for 5 hours and we applied some gel bait after. Here is a picture I took right after the treatment.

Three months go by and I go back for the first time and guess what: Not a single cockroach!

The following excerpt is from an interview with Tom Costello, Technical Director at GreenTech Heat Solutions.

QIs heat an effective tool for cockroach control?

AYes. GreenTech Heat is highly effective in the treatment of cockroaches. It will kill all stages of cockroaches from eggs to adults. Our equipment has successfully treated millions of cockroach infestations and the process received a patent in 1990. Heat is the only treatment that can eliminate the current infestation, prevent the eggs from hatching, and make the building smell better in one succinct treatment.

QIs heat ovicidal?

AYes. Cockroaches and their eggs have no chemical resistance to heat. When a structure reaches lethal temperatures they have nowhere to hide. Heat will kill the ootheca and make eggs unviable. This makes GreenTech Heat the best process that can kill all generations of cockroaches in a single treatment—wherever the cockroaches might try to scurry and hide.

QWhat temperatures are needed to kill cockroaches?

A155˚F to 160˚F for 90 minutes will achieve a complete kill. Lower temperatures can synergize slow-acting desiccants like boric acid dust (which when used alone can require 8 to 12 weeks) for a quick kill. We recommend dusting in false cabinet bottoms, and wall voids. GreenTech Heat penetrates every part of the structure, seeking out cockroaches and leaving them nowhere to hide. Heat seeks out the insects, reducing your labor costs, treatment times, and repeat visits.

QWhat other advantages are there to using heat?

ACockroaches have a tell-tale smell and create a filth everywhere they go. Not only does heat eliminate the “cockroach smell” these insects leave wherever they are found, it sanitizes and denatures the proteins in the urine and fecal matter left behind by cockroaches. Heat kills both the living infestation and destroys the source of lingering odors. GreenTech Heat equipment is perfect for treating restaurants, retirement communities, rental housing, hotels, and hospitals.

QWhat steps are needed post-treatment?

APost-treatment procedures are minimal. I suggest using a HEPA filtration vacuum to remove dead cockroaches, feces, and shed skins, and open windows to allow the structure to air and cool. Using bait stations after the treatment can confirm the kill.

Heat goes everywhere a cockroach can hide. It gets under and behind the refrigerator and throughout all the cabinetry in the breakroom. Heat gets to all the surfaces and nooks and crannies in the bathrooms. Heat penetrates all crevices a cockroach can get into.

No games or gimmicks. No spray, hope, and pray you got all the bed bugs. GreenTech Heat has a better solution for eliminating the dangers associated with reopening the office.
