Factors affecting heat treatment areas and service times

by Dr. Michael R. Linford

Some people ask why we understate the daily treatment areas for our heaters. I believe the answer is quite simple: I do my best to be an honest man. I would much rather receive a phone call from a new— or even a long-time— customer happily telling me they successfully managed to treat a larger infestation in any given time. There are a multitude of factors that influence treatment areas and service times:

  • We don’t live in a perfect world - Anyone can quote a thermal death point and lethal exposure time from a laboratory study. Bringing the technology into the real world brings all the real-world complexities laboratory conditions will not take into consideration.
  • We know very few people have been doing this for 30 years - During the late 1980s, my team and I worked closely with Dr. Charles Forbes of UC Dominguez Hills and Dr. Walter Ebling from UCLA. We were first to develop and commercialize thermal remediation technologies for the extermination of wood-destroying organisms like termites and powder-post beetles. This was the basis of my first heat treatment patent. In the years since, we adapted the process and equipment to kill bed bugs, arachnids, food pests, other insects, and their eggs. This technology is second-nature for us— and may not yet be for you. This is the primary reason behind offering our exclusive Master Heat Technician Certification program with every heat equipment package priced at $2,000 and up.
  • Many factors affect treatment times - Decades of success in the structural pest control market allowed us to refine our understanding of treatment thermodynamics and the associated contingencies. Building materials, furnishings, clutter, weather and wind (two very different factors!), starting temperatures, and degree of infestation can all dramatically affect treatment times. It is impossible to account for every contingency.
  • Airflow restrictions - Our heat technology utilizes convected airflow to minimize treatment times and maximize treatment areas. When a strong airflow cannot easily reach all areas of the treatment zone, lethal heat can be difficult to achieve in those places. Restricted airflow is often caused by compartmentalization from building layout or obstructive furniture. We have refined our heat treatment techniques to scale from individual rooms to large, multi-floor, multi-unit residential and commercial buildings.
  • We don’t have a hidden asterisk - We needed some metric to measure performance by, and we chose an 8-hour treatment time to be accurate and reflect what we believed was a realistic work day.
  • We respect your off-duty time - I believe everyone should work smart and put in the day they do. Rather than assume you and your team will extend your workday, I would rather quote a slightly smaller square footage for an 8-hour treatment day than automatically assume you will put in a 10- or 12-hour day.
